I need help elaborating the following?
I chose five things that I thought was significant to the development of mankind through history. Can u help me make it more?
1. The pyramid was used as tombs for the pharaohs and their queens.
I think it’s important because it teaches us history and who was the most well-known pharaoh, according to its temple, tombs, pharaoh Khufu was.
2. The Harappa shows the earliest imprints of human life.
It’s important because it shows that before us there was human life.
3. The compass is used for determining directions.
It helps us find our way around the world.
4. Gunpowder is an explosive mixture and was first used to celebrate instead of using it as a tool of battle.
5. Silk was made from the threads in the cocoons of silk worms and used as clothing.
Silk is used for clothing and others things and is very stylish.
The pyramids were significant because of the architectural, engineering, mathematics and construction skills developed to raise them.
The lodestone, then the compass were important navigational aids for exploration.
Silk was important because of the trade and trade routes which arose because of it.
Gunpowder was important because it changed the nature of warfare.
The wheel was important because it made it easier to transport heavy loads more quickly.
Agriculture was important because it allowed the creation of surplus food, increasing the population and enabling the rise of other specialist skills such as artisans, craftsmen, engineers, traders, and warriors.
Paper and the printing press were important to the dissemination of knowledge and ideas.
The best series of documentaries I ever saw regarding this type of thinking was the BBC Series “Connections”, with James Burke [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Connections_(TV_series)]
Burke also wrote a series of Connections articles in Scientific American, and published a book of the same name, all built on the same theme of exploring the history of science and ideas, going back and forth through time explaining things on the way and, generally, coming back to the starting point.
PS: Don’t worry about individual civilisations such as the Harappa, Sumerian, Mycenean Han etc.
