For black women who don’t perm, what do you do?

For years I have permed my hair. However, I sustained a lot of damage from it. My hair used to be to my shoulders and now is above my ears. For the last year I have done a lace weave which braids my hair into a circular braid and then the wig/weave is laced onto the outer parts of my hair.
I am thrilled that my hair has grown a lot without me constantly pulling, curling and putting chemicals (I am guilt of coloring it too) on it. When I get the weave out, I really do not want to do perms (or color…I am done experimenting) anymore and I don’t think the natural look would look good on me.
So I was wondering for those who don’t want to use perms,what do you use? A hot comb or flat iron if you want to get your hair straighter?

I have a relaxer now, but before I did I would flat iron it and straighten the edges with a hot comb. My whole technique to get my hair straight and soft was this:
–wash
–deep condition
–towel dry
–apply a leave-in conditioner or moisturizer
–blow dry (right now I’m a huge fan of blow drying with a round brush because I can use more tension and get straighter hair than with a blow dryer with a comb attachment or a blow dryer on its own)
–spray a heat protectant in my hair (I use one by Beyond the Zone)
–flat iron
–press edges with a comb if needed
–if any flyaways are popping up, use a tiny bit of moisturizer
This is still how I do my hair and my hair always feels soft and smooth and healthy. Good luck!
