Have any other black women put serious thought into going natural?
Right now, I have Remy extensions in, I think they look great but I just don’t like having to go through the hassle of getting it put in and not to mention the damage it does to my hair. When the girl that does my hair took out my old extensions, there were split-ends and my hair looked terrible and the damage was apparent. I just want a more natural way to look beautiful because my hair deserves better and doesn’t deserve all these chemicals and other bad stuff in it.
What hairstyles do you recommend to this black woman in need? Micros, braids, afro, mini-afro?? I’ve been looking into the micros but i heard they damage your hair, is that true?
You name it, and I have done it: braids, jherri curl (in the early 90s, not now), weave, more braids, wigs, relaxers, everything!!!! India Arie has a song called “I am not my hair”, which I think should be the black woman’s anthem. I have done everything in that song except shaved my head like she did.
For some of the same exact reasons you mentioned above, I made the decision to go natural 11 months ago and have not looked back once. My relaxed hair just never behaved right. It was always dry, I always experienced breakage, and I got tired of wasting money. I have tried going to the beauty shop every week, and that just was like throwing money down the drain. I have tried just about every hair care product known to man. ANYTHING that said it would eliminate or reduce breakage, provide extra moisture, or even if it just had a lady with pretty hair on the picture–I bought. Finally, I said, hey, hey, I am not my hair…i am not this skin…, je je. No, for real. I just said, enough is enough. I wanted to be able to exercise and I couldn’t because of my hair. I read something that Michelle Obama said that was just very profound. She said that her hair was not going to determine her health. And it is true.
I wore braids and wigs for about 8 months until I had a reasonable amount of new growth. I then wore the relaxed ends really curly but then cut off all the relaxer. I usually wear my hair in a two-strand twist-out. I wish I knew you so I could show you. But, you can go to facebook and go to “Natural Hair Rules”— there are over 1000 pictures of everyday black women with natural styles, of all lengths. You will get wonderful ideas about hairstyles that you can do yourself.
You know, it has been a journey and longer my hair is natural, the more I learn about it. My hair is very, very, very coarse. It was even hard to straighten with a relaxer. My whole life, stylists have complained to me about how hard my hair is to manage, and they made me feel I really had bad hair. I was a little nervous about going natural because I was like, how am I going to manage my “bad” hair? But you know what? My hair isn’t bad at all! It’s really thick, but that’s what most people want because it looks so full! It has become so soft and easy for me to manage. You learn anything with experience. Now I can comb my hair without a handfull of broken, damaged hair being in the comb. Plus, something I never realized before is that coarse hair like mine holds styles longer. Softer hair doesn’t hold as well. I don’t have a hair bill anymore, and I don’t have to spend all day and night at the beauty shop. My hair supplies consist of: a basic shampoo and conditioner, olive oil, and a twist/lock gel that is $3.99. That’s basically it.
My only regret is that I didn’t go natural sooner. I absolutely love it and I get tons of compliments on my hair all the time. Plus, there are natural hair salons that specialize in natural hair. Go to them a couple times and watch what they do. You can learn to do it too. If you want straight hair, press it. Going natural is much healthier for you hair, and also gives you a strange sense of liberation. I did think I looked pretty with my old favorite style, the roller wrap, but the natural style I wear now brings out my feature more.
I have contemplated Sister Locks, but I just am hesitant to do anything permanent because I like to change up my styles too much. Make sure you go to facebook and check out the pics. Sorry to write so much, but I’m passionate about this issue. Best to you!
