Should wide screen PC monitors be used for gaming?
Do they ‘stretch’ the picture? And if you set the ratio to a more normal look, does that mean you have a much smaller picture than the advertised screen size suggested with left over ‘dead’ screen space on each side? I was thinking about getting a new monitor. I will be using it for gaming as well as Photoshop work. What things are important to consider?
At this point, i’d say the industry is moving toward wide screen. If the game you’re playing is designed for wide screen and you have a normal square screen, you’ll get black bars on the top and bottom of the display. If you buy a game designed for a normal square screen and you use wide screen, you’ll get the black bars on the left and right side of the display.
At this point, I would only consider wide-screen monitors. Its the way forward from a technology perspective. Wide screen gives you more working room (in photoshop you can keep your tools to the right, along with any other programs you need, and your currently being worked on image to the left.) and in gaming, you’ll be happier with a wide screen.
