By wearing wigs, weaves etc are black female celebs making black women feel that their natural hair is ugly?
It has been suggested in the press that by covering up their natural (afro) hair with wigs, weaves and hair extensions black female celebrities, such as Beyonce, are making young black women feel that their natural hair is unattractive. The hair used in wigs etc is almost always Caucasian and some people therefore think that, by wearing it, black celebrities are sending a message to black women that Caucasian hair is better or more attractive.
I have afro hair myself and wear a weave mainly because my natural hair is really hard to care for and maintain.
I’m not sure how I feel about this issue so am really intrigued to see what opinions other people have.
First thing.. With Celebrities, these women are entertainers.. not only is it extremely convienient for them to wear wigs & weaves when working, it also gives them a chance to switch up their look constantly with out damaging their hair. When their not working, who hasn’t seen them with their natural hair pinned in a ponytail or in hats and scarfs. It has nothing to do with self hatred, it’s 2008, people need to stop being so close minded and get with reality. FYI: Wigs and weaves are not made from Cauasian hair .. The majority of wigs and weaves, if not all, are made from Asian Hair (does that mean we all want to be Asian) and whats not made from Asian Hair, is made from Indian Hair , does that mean we want to be indian hair. Weaves come in all different textures, you can get a afro kinky weave or a Natural Straight weave that’s more coarse that resembles Black hair that’s 18″, it doens’t or we can purchase hair that’s mixed with human hair and yak, I know I don’t want to be a Yak, what about you? It doesnt matter, what kind of hair you wear.. The hair doesn’t make you as a person..
