I can’t finish my last paper for the semester?
Hi- Im a junior in college and I have only one more paper to go for the year– it’s a 10 page paper comparing vocalizations in humans and rats. I only have a couple more pages to go, but I just can’t seem to finish this paper. I have an extension, but I’m depressed and it’s making it hard to work, and I keep getting distracted. It’s so difficult because outside my window, everyone is packing up and going home for the year and I’m stuck in this miserable dark room and can’t leave until I’m done with this paper, and it’s taking forever. Does anyone have any tips for how to get motivated? I would really like to be done with this…
Actually, looking out the window or some other distraction for an hour or so might be exactly what you need.
Very often the best way to refocus on a writing assignment is to walk away from it for a little while and do something else. Then come back with a clear head and wrap it up.
Some tips for filling a paper when you have no good ideas:
* quote something – but only if you’re allowed to in the paper.
* expand the thesis and then adjust the conclusion to that expansion. Then fill in the missing parts.
* find a complicated idea in a paragraph and expand it or explain the concepts.
* site some stats – stats take up space. But make sure they’re relevant.
* take one of your academic journal citations and find a countering opinion in another. Compare the two in that paragraph.
* don’t use common names when a nice long scientific name will do. (professors know this trick)
Don’t try these – they never work:
* increased margins
* bigger font (but do use the largest font and typeface you’re allowed if you need filler space)
* increased line spacing (either single or double as required)
* very large block quotes unless they’re allowed
* widow-orphan control on pagination
