why does society choose to classify people by their color/ethnicity?
What I mean by this is if we’re all human, then why does society find it necessary to classify us based on our skin color? or is racial division just a way for us to tell cultural/religious differences?
Since you posted this question under Sociology, I’m going to answer it from a sociological framework.
Yes, you’re right. We are all human. Kingdom Animalia, phylum Cordata, class mammalia, etc. etc. all the way down to our species Homo sapiens sapiens. However, that doesn’t mean that we’re all exactly the same when it comes to all fathomable variables. In sociology, especially, the racial differences are vast and they’re studied in many different ways, not only to understand said differences but to improve the general livelihood and well being of all persons in society.
For example, racial and ethnic minorities are notoriously overrepresented in the below-poverty-level population. By dividing the cohort under study into ethnic groups we can examine what characteristics lead them to be in these groups. Is it lower education? Fewer chances for social mobility? Some sort of stereotyping or racist mentality holding them back, by no fault of their own? Whatever the characteristic is, we can then apply the knowledge to helping them, and, ideally, closing the gap. Without examining the population in terms of racial heritage, this could never be achieved.
So, basically, yes, it is almost necessary to classify based on skin color from a SOCIOLOGICAL stand point. Society as a whole (which you asked about) has no reason – that’s called racial profiling or just being racist. As a criminologist I personally see the value of categorizing people based on race and ethnicity FROM AN ACADEMIC STAND POINT only. Society by and large doesn’t “need” to, but it does. As to the second part of your question, race can give some clues as to a persons cultural or religious differences, but in many modern societies this can be iffy. Many minority groups have assimilated into the larger culture and show few or no differences from the mother paradigms.
