Archives Question: Why did black men stop perming their hair after the 60′s but the black women didn’t?
I never got a real answer for this. This was back when i was actually interested in asking sensible questions, but most black people thought it was racist that I even asked.
Think Little Richard, and his hair, from the old footage and pictures it seems both black men and women did it, but now in modern times, you never see black guys perming their hair, but black women still do it.
Well, some of the ganstas (on the West Coast) still do it. But you’re right for the most part many Black men stopped. What you’re speaking about is a “conk” that was lye that Black men used to put in their hair to make it appear straighter.
Once the 70′s came around, Blacks embraced their culture more than ever. And many Black men viewed a “conk” as self-hate.Today there are many Black women that wear natural hair, but not enough.
