Alot of people have already answered fashion but actually the wigs had a purposeful usage as well. The white wigs were dusted with a fine white powder that was made from crushed turkey bones. This helped keep away ticks, mites and other vermin that might infest ones hair.
Fashion dictated that white wigs could not be worn until old age so younger men wore wigs of their actual hair color and shaved ther hair short and had the underside of their wigs dusted.
Often vermin did live in people’s hair as at the time many people lived under the supersition that if they were to bathe they could die.
They believed a sort of barrier kept the soul close to body and if one was not careful it could be washed away. Full emerson bathing was done only once or twice yearly often in May. (The concept of a June bride became popular becasue the bride would still be fresh from her bath in May..eww)
The upper class not as superstitious as those below their station recongized the medicinal value of bathing and sought out sea bathing and spa bathing.
Though people did carry pleasant smelling herbs and flowers on their body and would wash the arms, legs, and face with water and soap balls.
