How can I free up memory/disk space on my laptop?
My laptop had 1GB of memory and found that it was running quite slowly after downloading a few games and music etc.. So i goes into PC world bought a 2GB memory stick. Installed it and now my computer says it has 2GB of memory. Great.
But after defragmenting my system, a window came up telling me about some files that couldn’t be defragmented. One was 1.66GB!
So i went into my computer and checked the properties on my ‘C’ drive to see how my free space was doing and it says ive using 32.5GB of space and only 2GB is free! The pie is almost all blue (full). Why is this??
Btw i have done disk cleanup aswell.
Please help my as i am pulling my hair out over this. Many many thanks to you all.
The 1.66GB file is probably either the paging file or the hibernation file. You can’t, and shouldn’t, touch these.
To free up some space, you’ll need to use something like Ccleaner to delete temporary files, etc. this may not give you much extra space, though.
You may then need to delete some documents (songs and videos can be very large files). You could burn any you want to keep onto CD/DVD before you delete them from your hard drive to free up some space. You could also uninstall any programs you don’t use (from Add/Remove Programs in the Control panel) and look for smaller alternatives, like using Foxit Reader instead of Adobe Reader.
You seem to have a pretty small hard drive, however, so maybe you should invest in a larger one. Use a drive cloning program to clone the existing drive to the new one via a usb portable drive bay (the 2½” ones are pretty cheap) and then just swap them over.
