How was slavery justified?
How did the Southerners who held human beings against their will justify this evil? I just don’t get what kind of person would feel they have the right to own another human being like nothing more than a tool. I’m not black myself, but even I know that if it breathes like a human, talks like a human, and looks like a human, its a human, regardless of skin color, so I just don’t get what mindset they had justified slavery. I really don’t trust history textbooks at school, because I am pretty sure most of the crap in there is propaganda, so if someone here could answer this, it’d be much appreciated.
Slavery is a situation as old as the Bible. There are even verses in the Bible that tell you how to treat your slaves.
Now, not just Southerners had slaves, it was fairly widespread throughout the country. It still is, today throughout the world.
Slavery is a good economic system for an agrarian nation. Human labor is cheap and easily replaced. How do you know they were held against their will? They knew no other way of life and lived what they knew.
Remember: Slavery is part of the triangular trade. New England traders took rum to Africa, where chiefs had gathered their own people to trade for rum, the slaves came to the Caribbean islands to harvest sugar cane which was sent to New England to make rum. There you have your triangle. And not just in the South.
This is an argument as old as mankind. But it still goes on today, in Asia parts of Africa, central and south america. So maybe you should back off on a blanket condemnation of Southerners.
Most of the plantation owners never saw a slave. They had slaves handling slaves. So it was not as personal as you would think it was.
It was not racism, pure and simple, as one person says. Indentured servants were slaves. Asians enslave each other, as do Africans.
