Hair dye help please!?
I’ll just try and keep this as short as possible:
My hair right now is a medium/light blonde (I’m naturally blonde) and I intend of dying it a few shades lighter with highlights.
I have:
Two 30g sachets of ‘Wella Professionals’ Multi Blonde ‘Dust-Free lightening powder’
A 40ml Ion Peroxide ‘Cream developer’ 12% 40vol
Koleston Perfect ‘Special Ash Blonde’ 12/1 Permanent creme hair colour. (60ML)
Please help me.. I only want the top section of my hair highlighted, and how much of each should I mix to achieve a light ash blonde colour? THANK YOU SO MUCH. 
First of all the dust free powder lightener and the 40 vol cream developer you have is WAY TO STRONG for your hair. DO NOT put that on you hair. That is the strongest lightener they make for professional use only. It is used for lightening more then 6 levels or stripping out old or mistaken color. Yor hair is already blonde and if you use that on your hair it WILL break OFF!!!!!! The special ash blonde 12/1 is a level 12 toner only, it has very little pigment, used only to tone hair after it has been prelightened.
If you are set on using what you have my best suggestion is this. Go back to the beauty supply and get this….20vol cream developer small bottle and 10 volume cream developer small bottle, and a FOAM CAP, and a highlighting hook, or use a very small crochet hook if you have one. If they don’t have a foam cap, you can use a plastic highlighting or “tipping cap”. Start with dry hair smooth it down straight, and apply a shine product to ease it through the cap. Put on the frosting or highlighting cap, and pull pieces of hair through from all over the top of your head (since that is the only area you want to lighten) using the smallest crochet hook or frosting (highlighting hook) ((available at beauty supply)). When you feel you have enough hair through the cap, then…mix the powder you have(equal parts) with the 20 vol cream developer to a pea soup consistancy and apply to only the hair that you pulled through the cap. Try not to over saturate the hair so that is doesn’t leak through the holes in the cap, that is why the pea soup consistancy is important. Put a plastic bag over the hair that is being processed and apply heat using a hair dryer, and watch closely, your hair may only take about 10 -15 minutes to get to a much lighter shade of blonde. When the hair appears to be a very pale yellow, rinse the hair in luke warm water and very lightly shampoo, leaving the cap ON the whole time. Towel try the hair you just lightened and in another bowl mix (equal parts) koleston perfect ash blonde with the 10vol cream developer. Now here is the secret trick of the trade……(hairdressers are gonna kill me for this) IF you did not buy the 10 vol devoloper that is FINE but you still must use some form of devolper so use REGULAR household hydrogen peroxyde, it is even less than 10vol and will do less damage to you hair!! Mix it the same 50/50. I do not know what the consistancy of the Koleston Perfect product is, so I do not know what the end consistancy will be, but a typical toner consistancy does not matter. It can differ from water to paste, as long as it does the job. So mix the Koleston ash blonde 50/50 with 10vol or household peroxide and put that on your hair for about 15 miuntes WITHOUT heat. LASTLY rinse your hair, lighty lather with shampoo, THEN REMOVE THE CAP and wet down your entire head and continue to shampoo, rinse, condition, rinse, and done. You will need to detangle your hair while it is wet with a WIDE tooth comb, and take your time. You will have the results you are looking for. Th bottom of your hair will remain the same color it is now, while the top will be at least 2-3 shades lighter, and nicely toned and NOT yellow. By using the cap, you will achieve the 2-3 tone look without the 2-3 hundred $$$$ expense of a salon. Hope this helps. Have fun!
