In terminator series why do the humans and the machines always send just one of their kind thru the time portal to the past??? Why dint the machines send 100s of these terminators to nail Connor???

What kinda fools were they??? Dint they learn from the first two parts that one wasn’t matchin up to the task!!!!
I think that the machines knew that sending back an army of machines would tip the humans off to the future giving them more time to figure out what to destroy to make sure that future never happened. So by sending back a large force to kill John Connor they sentenced themselves to nonexistence. Just a thought.
